blueOASISAbout blueOASIS
blueOASIS is a young and fast growing company focusing on developing sustainable solutions for ocean protection. blueOASIS is working on four scopes: numerical analysis for offshore renewables, ships and platforms, underwater acoustics, smart ocean modelling and sensorization, and AI-based digital twinning. Its flagship product is Hydrotwin, a disruptive Ocean Digital Twin platform (https://www.blueoasis.tech/hydrotwin). blueOASIS is now looking for a proactive Biologist with experience on Fish/Cetacean acoustics and vision identification to join its AI Dev team towards speeding up the development of Hydrotwin.
Role Description
blueOASIS is seeking a technically strong Marine Bioacoustics & AI Vision Specialist to join its AI team, working at the intersection of marine bioacoustics, acoustic and visual data labelling, and AI model development. The candidate will oversee the marine acoustic and visual labelling process, including the training and supervision of labellers, development and implementation of annotation protocols, and quality control and validation of labelled datasets. Working closely with AI engineers and data scientists, the candidate will help prepare high-quality datasets for the training, validation, and testing of underwater sound&vision detection and classification algorithms, while using biological expertise to support the continuous improvement of both the data and AI models.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the marine acoustic data labelling process, ensuring the quality, consistency, and traceability of labelled datasets.
- Lead and supervise the marine visual data labelling process, ensuring the quality, consistency, and traceability of labelled datasets.
- Coordinate, train, and support students and part-time labellers, including task allocation, technical guidance, and quality monitoring.
- Define, document, and continuously improve annotation protocols, categories, criteria, and workflows.
- Review and validate annotations, resolve ambiguous acoustic events, and monitor inter-annotator agreement.
- Annotate and validate marine acoustic data, including cetacean vocalisations and other biological, environmental, and anthropogenic sound sources.
- Annotate and validate marine visual data, including fish, cetacean and reptiles.
- Work with the AI team to prepare and assess training, validation, and test datasets for underwater sound&vision detection and classification algorithms.
- Ensure appropriate organisation and traceability of recordings/images, annotations, metadata, and dataset versions.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement and automation of labelling, quality-control, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
- Report on labelling progress, dataset quality, limitations, and data requirements to the AI team.
Expertise Needed
- Degree in Marine Biology, Bioacoustics, Marine Science, Biology, Ecology, Acoustic Engineering, Computational Vision, or a related field.
- Practical experience in marine bioacoustic data annotation and analysis, including cetacean vocalisations and spectrogram interpretation.
- Hands-on experience with acoustic annotation tools such as Raven Pro, PAMGuard, Audacity, Triton, Kaleidoscope, or equivalent.
- Experience or demonstrated ability to coordinate, train, and supervise labellers and ensure annotation quality.
- Understanding of how labelled datasets are used for AI/ML training, validation, and testing.
- Strong organisational and communication skills, with good written and spoken English.
- Authorisation to work in Portugal.
Added Value (Two of Any of These Skills Are Needed)
