Qualified individuals in social sciences and interdisciplinary studies are invited to apply their expertise to policy issues associated with the world's oceans and coasts. The Marine Policy Center (MPC) applies social science and policy research to pressing ocean issues while advancing the integration of natural and social sciences in marine affairs and policy.
WHOI seeks outstanding individuals with academic preparation in marine affairs and policy, economics, law, public policy, international relations, environmental and natural resource management, infrastructure and urban development, conservation biology, earth and ocean sciences, and related disciplines. Scholars will have the opportunity to embed their research within one of the world's leading oceanographic research institutions, connecting their work with WHOI's strengths in ocean science and engineering.
The main objectives of the Program are: (i) to foster interdisciplinary research that integrates the social and natural sciences to address marine policy questions; and (ii) to advance actionable knowledge and tools that inform effective local, national, and international ocean policy and decision-making.
Awards will be based on demonstrated research independence, productivity, originality, and community service. Priority will be given to candidates whose scholarly work demonstrates a strong interest in marine policy. Recipients will pursue independent research under the mentorship of MPC scientists and may also be co-mentored by researchers from WHOI's scientific departments whose expertise complements the proposed research.
Applicants must complete a doctoral degree prior to taking up their appointment at WHOI no later than October 1, 2027. They should have research interests related to the objectives described above.
Scholarships are awarded for 18-month appointments. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of at least $73,000 per year, relocation and health and welfare allowances, as well as an independent research budget.
In addition to the application form, the following are required:
Applicants are encouraged to contact members of the MPC and, where appropriate, the WHOI scientific staff as they develop their research statements.
Applications will be accepted up to October 15, 2026. Evaluations of applicants will be based on demonstrated research promise and the relevance of the proposed research to the objectives noted above. Awards will be announced in December 2026.
Appointments may begin any time after January 1, 2027, and before October 1, 2027.
