About ICM-CSIC

The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) is the largest marine research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It is also the first marine science centre to be accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, a recognition to the institution's leadership in the field of marine research in Spain and to its commitment to create social impact.

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated researcher or research engineer to join the Marine Geosciences Department at the ICM-CSIC and contribute to several ongoing and upcoming projects focused on offshore environmental monitoring using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).

The selected candidate will work with DAS observations acquired on submarine fibre-optic cables in the western Mediterranean, contributing to the development of new approaches for monitoring physical processes across the solid Earth, water column, and atmosphere-ocean interface. Research activities combine acoustics, signal processing, scientific computing and large-scale data analysis, with applications ranging from natural-hazard detection to marine environmental monitoring and offshore infrastructure observation.

Main Tasks

  • Processing and analysis of DAS data acquired on submarine fibre-optic cables.
  • Detection and characterization of seismic, acoustic and environmental signals.
  • Development and adaptation of signal-processing workflows for noisy offshore environments.
  • Organization, quality control and management of large DAS datasets.
  • Development of computational tools for data processing, visualization and interpretation.
  • Contribution to scientific publications, technical reports and conference presentations.
  • Interaction with project partners and participation in collaborative research activities.
  • Depending on the candidate profile, development of automated detection or classification approaches based on machine learning methods.

Expected Background and Skills

  • Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Telecommunications Engineering, Data Science, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with scientific programming in Python or similar environments.
  • Experience in acoustics, signal processing, and/or large-scale data analysis.
  • Interest in environmental monitoring and interdisciplinary scientific applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an international research environment.

The Offer

  • Full-time contract with funding secured for 2 years.
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, consistent with CSIC pay scales.
  • Potential for contract extension depending on project evolution and funding availability.
  • Candidates interested in shorter-term positions are also encouraged to apply.
  • Flexible scheduling working hours and partial remote working.
  • Highly stimulating environment with support services and professional guidance to enhance career development.
