Join the Team: Marine Scientist – Community Engagement and Best Practices

Restoring underwater forests through citizen science.

At Cleanwave Foundation, we believe marine restoration works best when science and communities work together. We restore marine habitats across Mallorca, from Portocolom to the MedGardens Formentor and MedGardens Sant Elm pilot projects, involving local communities in the process.

We are looking for a practical, curious and proactive person with a background in marine sciences who enjoys varied work: one day you might be facilitating a participatory process and the next analysing results, designing outreach activities or writing reports that help create a real impact.

We are a small, dynamic team in which each person takes on significant responsibilities, with a versatile role combining science, operations and community impact. We offer space to contribute ideas and opportunities for development as the organisation evolves.

Main Conditions

  • Reports to: General Management.
  • Main conditions: full-time, 40 hours per week, with flexible working hours according to the work plan.
  • Salary: €34,080 gross per year, plus expenses.
  • Expected start date: 16 November 2026.

Main Responsibilities

Community Engagement and Best Practices

  • Organise and manage relationships with stakeholders involved in restoration activities.
  • Encourage local community participation, including forums and activities between meetings.
  • Encourage involvement from the business community.
  • Coordinate relationships with other NGOs and local alliances.
  • Generate and share open knowledge through best practice guides, interviews and questionnaires.
  • Manage relationships with public authorities to obtain permits and develop potential public-private partnerships.
  • Coordinate and track applications and renewals for permits and authorisations.

Education and Outreach

  • Prepare outreach materials, content and activities.
  • Promote and deliver these activities.
  • Jointly manage relationships with educational institutions.
  • Create and share content for the general public in local communities through Instagram, Facebook, local media, posters, leaflets and other channels.

Shared Responsibilities

  • Key stakeholder relationships: help manage relationships with strategic stakeholders across institutional, scientific, conservation, community and technology sectors, among others.
  • Scientific communication: write clear and engaging reports for different audiences, both technical and non-technical.
  • Fieldwork: carry out ecological monitoring through diving and snorkelling, support restoration activities and work with local stakeholders in the field.
  • Funding applications and calls for proposals: help prepare and submit applications.
  • Innovation and growth: contribute ideas to improve projects, expand their impact and help shape the organisation’s future.
  • Policy advocacy: help draft reports to obtain permits and contributions to public participation processes.

Requirements

  • A background in Marine Biology, Oceanography, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Experience in community work and institutional communication, for example with public authorities. Training in facilitation will be particularly valued.
  • Experience communicating scientific knowledge to diverse audiences.
  • Scuba diving certification; preferably Divemaster.
  • A category B driving licence or higher and access to a vehicle.
  • Proficiency in Catalan and Spanish, as well as a good level of English, will be valued.

Skills and Attributes

  • Proactivity: you identify what needs to be done and take the initiative to make it happen.
  • Teamwork: you enjoy working closely with a small, motivated team.
  • Curiosity and adaptability: you are comfortable switching between fieldwork, analysis and outreach.
  • Communication skills: you know how to turn scientific knowledge into engaging and accessible messages.
  • Organisation and flexibility: you can manage logistics and adapt to changing fieldwork conditions.
  • Creativity: you contribute ideas to improve projects, outreach and their impact.
  • Attention to detail: you care about working with precision and scientific rigour.

What We Offer

  • A varied, purposeful role combining science, community and impact.
  • The opportunity to grow alongside an innovative and expanding marine restoration initiative.
  • A flexible, hybrid working environment, with an office in Santa Maria.
  • A collaborative, passionate team committed to its mission.
